Public Speaking Anxiety Treatment: What Actually Helps

If you have reached the point of searching for public speaking anxiety treatment, you have probably already tried the obvious things: more rehearsal, breathing apps, "imagine the audience in their underwear". When those have not been enough, it helps to understand what treatment actually targets.

This guide walks through the main options available in Australia, where clinical hypnotherapy fits, and what a course at Norwest Wellbeing typically involves.

What Treatment Actually Targets

Effective treatment is not only about better slides. The pattern usually includes one or more of:

  • Anticipatory dread in the days before a talk
  • Fear of judgement or of going blank
  • Physical symptoms that then become a focus of more anxiety
  • Avoidance of meetings, interviews, or promotions
  • A skills gap that still needs practice, even once the fear settles

Hypnotherapy is well placed for the first four. It does not replace preparing the content.

Map of Treatment Approaches

Skills practice and exposure

Toastmasters-style groups, rehearsal, and gradual exposure help the nervous system learn that the predicted catastrophe does not arrive. Useful for almost everyone, and often combined with therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT addresses unhelpful thinking and supports structured exposure. A well-known study by Schoenberger and colleagues (1997) found that adding hypnosis to a CBT protocol for public speaking anxiety enhanced some outcomes compared with CBT alone.

Medication

Occasionally used for severe anxiety around a specific high-stakes event. Decisions belong with your GP or psychiatrist.

Clinical hypnotherapy

Works with the automatic fear response and mental rehearsal of calmer speaking. Complementary to skills practice, not a substitute for it.

How Hypnotherapy Helps

At Norwest Wellbeing, sessions generally work across three areas:

Lowering anticipatory dread. Much of the suffering happens before the event.

Rehearsing a calmer response. Guided imagery of the talk, meeting, or interview while you are relaxed.

Take-home tools. Self-hypnosis and settling skills you can use in the hours before you speak.

What a Course at Norwest Looks Like

A typical course runs for 2 to 5 sessions. Norwest Wellbeing reports a typical success rate of 80-85% over that range. Individual results vary.

Session one maps your triggers: presentations, meetings, interviews, virtual talks.

Early sessions introduce relaxation and begin addressing anticipatory anxiety.

Later sessions consolidate progress around a real upcoming speaking situation where possible.

Sessions are available in person at Norwest and via Zoom Australia-wide.

Who This Approach Suits

It tends to suit people who:

  • Know their material but still freeze or dread the event
  • Have already tried more rehearsal without lasting change
  • Want a complementary or drug-free option
  • Can combine sessions with actual speaking practice

If your fear is broader than presenting (parties, one-to-one conversations, eating in public), also look at our social anxiety page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hypnotherapy a substitute for CBT or Toastmasters?

No. It can sit alongside both. Some people find hypnotherapy enough on its own for a focused speaking fear.

How quickly does treatment work?

Many people notice less dread after the first session, with more substantial change typically within 2 to 5 sessions.

Will I need ongoing sessions?

The aim is lasting change and take-home skills, not dependence on ongoing sessions.

Can it be combined with beta blockers or other medication?

Yes, if prescribed. Do not change medication without your prescribing doctor.
